Dr. Benjamin Houston of Newcastle University and author of the new book “The Nashville Way: Racial Etiquette and the Struggle for Social Justice in a Southern City,” will give a lecture on racial change at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Historic Arkansas Museum.

The lecture is free and open to the public. The Historic Arkansas Museum is located at 200 E. Third St. in downtown Little Rock.

Houston’s talk is titled “A Manner of Segregation: Racial Etiquette and Racial Change in Nashville, Tennessee.”

His focus is on the evolving relationship between racial law and racial custom as exhibited by different settings within the city. Houston is especially interested in how this relationship has conditioned the cultural attitudes of between white and black people over time.
Houston is a lecturer in modern U.S. history. His research interests include civil rights, the African American freedom struggle, history of the U.S. South, 20th Century U.S. history, and oral history.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s Department of History and the Historic Arkansas Museum are co-sponsors of the event.
