Soccer: A thinking woman’s game

Our post this week comes from Judy Williams, director of communications at UALR and life-long soccer lover.

You gotta love soccer. Unlike baseball, it moves. Fast.

Unlike football, you don’t have to be a big bruiser to be competitive. Check out Ariel Galletti, Trojan midfielder. At only 5-foot-0, she sailed past her defenders. On Aug. 27, she put in her 10th career goal.

It’s a thinking woman’s game. Not only has defender Kailie Holloway figured out a strategy to keep attackers from scoring, she has figured out how to maintain a 3.0 or better GPA to win a place on the Sun Belt Honor Roll while playing an NCAA sport.

Talent can get you a starting position early.

Six-foot goalkeeper/freshman Sara Cavanaugh got her career start this month against Murray State, making three saves and playing the entire (hot!) 90 minutes.

As a former soccer soccer mom and coach, I’m thrilled that UALR’s team is already ahead of our total wins from all last season. This came when we defeated rival Missouri State on Sunday.

Watching the Trojans compete last Saturday night on the fabulous new Coleman Sports & Recreation field with new coach Adrian Blewitt was a real treat.

If you love soccer, want to learn more about the game, or want to check out the new complex, come out and support the Trojans this weekend as we host Louisiana Tech Friday at 7 p.m. Can’t make it Friday? Here’s the schedule for more choices.
