Angela Johnson, 21, a senior double major in psychology and philosophy at UALR, has been invited to attend The Oxford University Workshop on Human Rights in Oxford, England, next March.

UALR Professor Rochelle Green selected Johnson to accompany her to the workshop after identifying her as a promising undergraduate with strong research interests in social and political philosophy.

“Angela is one of our most outstanding philosophy majors with a GPA of 3.7,” said Green. “She is going to represent UALR extraordinarily well and certainly deserves this opportunity.”

Selected readings will be distributed to Johnson and other workshop participants in December.

Once at Oxford, undergraduates will be housed in the dorms at Hertford College where daily workshop sessions will focus on discussion of the materials and lectures on the readings.

Green will serve as Johnson’s mentor throughout the process. Completion of the entire workshop will result in a certificate for both.

Johnson, a first-generation college student from Pine Bluff, is also a founding member of the UALR Ethics Bowl team. She recently served as the team’s vice president and helped her team place fourth out of 16 teams in the regional competition held in San Antonio, Nov. 15 to 17.

Johnson’s interest in philosophy was piqued when she enrolled in an Ethics in Society course.

“I was blown away by it,” Johnson admitted. “I realized I was enjoying it too much. I took it as a sign I needed to make philosophy my major.”

Johnson, who also said she had never flown in an airplane before, said she was grateful for Dr. Green’s assistance in locating funding to help pay for the trip.

“This is going to be a great opportunity on so many levels,” Johnson said.
