The UALR Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology hosted its fifth annual Jazz & Juleps event on May 29.

Attendees helped raise $60,000 this year for the Zelda Selph Hoaglan Student Scholarship Fund. A gross total of $400,000 has been raised over the last five years for various other scholarship funds, according to the UALR Office of Alumni and Development.

Jazz & Juleps, a celebration of Better Hearing and Speech Month each May, has helped fund five new endowed audiology and speech pathology scholorships since it first began, according to UALR Vice Chancellor for Advancement Bob Denman.

“We are especially fortunate to honor different individuals associated with the department each year, and in so doing, we can dedicate the money raised to help fund endowed scholarships in their name,” Denman said.

Previously, money was raised for the Nan Ellen Dickinson East Student Scholarship Fund, the Beth Butler Eaton Student Scholarship Fund, the Dwane F. Treat Student Scholarship Fund, and the Loris Mayersohn Fullerton Student Scholarship Fund.

The evening’s festivities included hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, a live auction with Master of Ceremonies Craig O’Neill, and music by Mojo de Jazz.

Jazz & Juleps takes place each year at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion.
