New interactive art exhibit utilizes mirrors, artist talk Oct. 14

Visual artist Marianela de la Hoz will present an artist talk at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Room 161 of the Fine Arts Building at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. A reception in honor of De La Hoz will precede her talk from 4 to 6 p.m.

De La Hoz’s exhibit, “Speculum-Speculari,” is on display in UALR’s Gallery I now until Dec. 8.

“Speculum-Speculari” encourages viewers to engage and reflect upon the significance underlying the symbolism of mirrors and their functions.

Looking at paintings and mirrors, viewers are invited to participate with created and reflected surfaces. Using actual mirrors, the artist gives movement to the show and creates a dynamic participatory experience.

De La Hoz’s egg tempera paintings, silverpoint, ink, and graphite drawings, as well as mixed media combinations are presented along with painted phrases on mirrors that refer to reflection.

Born in Mexico City, De La Hoz has lived in San Diego for more than 10 years. Her art is exhibited widely in Mexico City and Southern California.

“Marianela De La Hoz: Speculum-Speculari” was organized by the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida.

Curator Dr. Amy Galpin was inspired to shape the exhibition around the painting Dweller on the Threshold” by Arthur Bowen Davies. The painting features a woman looking at her own image. It is part of the collection at Cornell Fine Arts Museum and included in this exhibition with the artworks of Marianela De La Hoz.

Brad Cushman, UALR Gallery director and curator, selected additional works for the university’s exhibition.

Each week, gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery will be open weekends from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays. All exhibitions and lectures are free and open to the public.
