The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will hold a free public lecture and weekend workshop on creating scientific visualization graphics.

Scientific visualization involves utilizing art to convey scientific concepts, medical procedures, and therapeutic treatments. Nick Bustamante, chair of the studio program at Louisiana Tech University’s School of Design, will hold a free public lecture at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in the Windgate Center of Art and Design room 101.

The lecture will be followed by a public workshop, “Scientific Visualization: Creating for Clients,” on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Windgate Center room 305. Only 15 spots are available, so early enrollment is advised. Those interested in attending the Saturday workshop should email Ricky Sikes at rwsikes@ualr.edu to register.

Artists will have the opportunity to obtain an overview of methods and techniques used to create successful visuals for a wide range of audiences. Because this workshop is designed for artists who have a basic understanding of drawing and color, individuals will need to have a certain level of skill that includes traditional or digital drawing or painting experience.

Bustamante teaches traditional and digital painting, conceptual design, pre-medical illustration, scientific visualization, and senior portfolio courses. Bustamante is co-founder of the Visual Integration of Science Through Art program at Louisiana Tech. His scientific and medical illustrations have been published in textbooks and research journals such as the American Chemical Society.
