Saturday, Oct. 8, is International Observe the Moon Night, and Darrell Heath, assistant lab animal technician in UALR’s Department of Biology, is organizing central Arkansas’s celebration of Earth’s only natural satellite.
Dr. Wim Vermaas, whose research team is leading a $5.2 million Department of Energy grant to develop an organism that could produce renewable bioenergy, will discuss his work at a bioenergy seminar from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at UALR’s EIT auditorium in the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Science (EIT).

A who’s who of Little Rock business and political leaders are asking voters on Sept. 13 to approve a 3/8 percent sales tax increase to create the Central Arkansas Technology Park. The goal is to harness innovations coming out of research labs at UALR, UAMS, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital and generate new businesses and new, well-paying 21st century jobs.
Two years ago, members of the Central Arkansas Transit Authority (CATA) suggested the regional bus system should begin converting its fleet from diesel fuel to alternatives that might be cleaner burning and more sustainable, such as compressed natural gas.

Dr. Joseph Francisco, 2010 president of the American Chemical Society, will meet with UALR faculty and students from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, in Fribourgh Hall room 102. Francisco will be receiving an honorary doctorate of science at UALR’s spring commencement ceremonies Saturday.

Legislators, policy-makers, STEM experts, teachers, administrators and university professors will gather for a summit Tuesday, May 17, sponsored by UALR to discuss Project STEM Starters, a research and development program aimed at developing more inquiry-based science instruction in Arkansas elementary schools. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics.
Middle and high school teams will compete in the Arkansas Science Olympiad Saturday, April 16, culminating in a 2 p.m. awards ceremony featuring keynote speeches by Nobel laureate in physics, Dr. Robert C. Richardson, and Dr. Katherine Olsen, former deputy director and chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation.
