Program Overview
The Master of Education in gifted, creative, and talented education K-12 online program provides specialized knowledge and competencies needed to meet the challenge of providing an appropriate education for children and adolescents with exceptional abilities.
The curriculum is structured in a developmental sequence that builds teaching and administrative skills reflecting best practices in the field. It explores a variety of theoretical frameworks for understanding talent development, as well as experiential learning and practical application.
This 30-hour program is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. It is also accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Students in the program work with an adviser to design a study plan tailored to their specific needs and career goals.
Program Details
Admission Requirements
- Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 (4.0 scale) or 3.0 in the last 60 hours; or Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a 3.0 GPA
- Favorable recommendation from faculty in the program
- Completed College of Education Biographical Data Sheet
- Valid teacher license; contact program coordinator for exceptions
Graduation Requirements
- 18 education core area hours;
- GATE 7350 Teaching the Gifted and Talented; GATE 7355 Creativity Seminar; GATE 7356 Current Issues in Research on Education of the Gifted and Talented; GATE 7357 Curriculum and Instruction in Gifted Education;
- Six practicum hours, or three practicum and three internship hours;
- Three additional approved gifted and talented hours;
- Three elective hours;
- A written comprehensive examination or 33 hours for the thesis or National Board Certification option.
