Education in many STEM disciplines relies largely on field-based activities to meet key learning outcomes. Remote teaching of learning outcomes traditionally taught in the field presents unique challenges for students, instructors, and institutions. A survey of faculty conducted during Spring 2020 revealed both substantial reduction of field-based learning outcomes, as well as instructor experience with substituting for traditional field activities and associated equity issues. We will discuss alternative substitutions for traditional field teaching in the context of the results of this survey and our shared experience as instructors that teach field-based activities.
