To Drop or Withdraw—What’s the Difference?

Dropping a Course

Removing one or more (but not all) courses from your academic schedule or specific part of the term is considered dropping a course.

A grade of “W” will be posted to the student’s transcript after the registration adjustment period has ended.

Withdrawing From All Courses

Removing all courses from your academic schedule or a specific part of the term is considered a withdrawal.

A grade of “W” will be posted to the student’s transcript for the final course from which they withdraw during the late registration/adjustment period and for all courses withdrawn after the late registration period has ended.

How do I Drop/Withdraw From a Course?

Before Classes Start

All Drop/Withdrawal requests must go through BOSS. The Office of Records & Registration cannot process these requests via email or phone.

During adjustment period (ends last day of late registration)

To determine this date please refer to the current academic calendar.

Note: All but the final course can be dropped in this manner.

  • Log into BOSS
  • Select Student Services from the options given
  • Click the Registration link from the menu
  • Click the Add/Drop Classes link from the menu
  • Select Drop from the drop-down menu next to the course(s) to drop
  • Click the Submit Changes button at the bottom of the page

Once one class remains, the student must submit a Drop/Withdrawal Request form to drop the last class.

After Classes Begin

Students can use this Drop/Withdrawal Request form to drop an individual class or to withdraw from part of the term or the entire semester.

This form should only be used for the student’s final course withdrawal after all other individual course drops have been submitted after the adjustment period end date.

Refer to the academic calendar for more information.

Financial Aid

Dropping or withdrawing can impact financial aid awards. Contact the Office of Financial Aid to determine how dropping or withdrawing could affect the student’s status.

Refunds and adjustments

Please refer to the refund schedule set by the Bursar’s Office for more information.

Course Audit

(Allows a student to take a class without the benefit of a grade or credit for the course; usually for self-enrichment and academic exploration.)

Requests to change a course to audit status must be made in BOSS at the time of registration. This change can only be submitted during the adjustment period. Full tuition for the course is required.

Refer to the academic calendar for more information.
