Come downtown to celebrate Día de los Muertos! On November 1, 2024, we are joining our neighbor, Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) in their annual Day of the Dead celebration. Visit us from 5:30 to 8:30 PM to see an altar (ofrenda) created by the Consulate of Mexico in Little Rock and learn about the Day of the Dead traditions around the world.
The event will feature authentic Mexican food, drinks, live music, traditional Day of the Dead customs, performances and paraphernalia, as well as a pedestrian parade.
Visitors to this year’s festival will also embark on a captivating journey through Mexican culture and heritage, where tradition, artistry, and history come together in a striking installation of four interconnected altars created by Mexican artist and Northwest Arkansas resident, Vicente Yañez. Combining traditional art forms and elements that span from prehispanic times to the modern day, these ofrendas pay tribute to Aztec mythology, the vibrant, colorful history of Mexican artisans, the golden age of cinema, and the spectacle of Lucha Libre.
Towering paper-mâché figures, intricate sawdust carpets, sculptures, and traditional offerings create an immersive experience that celebrates Mexico’s deep connection with death — not as an end, but as an integral, ever-present part of life itself. Day of the Dead is not just a day to commemorate the deceased, but also a time to show gratitude for living loved ones. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has proclaimed the Day of the Dead to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The holiday, also known as All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day, traditionally takes place after Halloween annually on Nov. 1 and 2.
El evento contará con auténtica comida mexicana, bebidas, música en vivo, costumbres tradicionales del Día de los Muertos, actuaciones y parafernalia, así como un desfile peatonal.
Los visitantes del festival de este año también se embarcarán en un viaje cautivador a través de la cultura y el patrimonio mexicanos, donde la tradición, el arte y la historia se unen en una sorprendente instalación de cuatro altares interconectados creados por el artista mexicano y residente del noroeste de Arkansas, Vicente Yañez. Combinando formas de arte tradicionales y elementos que abarcan desde la época prehispánica hasta la actualidad, estas ofrendas rinden homenaje a la mitología azteca, la vibrante y colorida historia de los artesanos mexicanos, la época dorada del cine y el espectáculo de la lucha libre.
Altísimas figuras de papel maché, intrincadas alfombras de aserrín, esculturas y ofrendas tradicionales crean una experiencia inmersiva que celebra la profunda conexión de México con la muerte, no como un fin, sino como una parte integral y siempre presente de la vida misma.El Día de los Muertos no es solo un día para conmemorar a los fallecidos, sino también un momento para mostrar gratitud por los seres queridos vivos. La Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) ha proclamado el Día de los Muertos como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad. La festividad, también conocida como el Día de Todos los Santos y el Día de los Fieles Difuntos, se celebra tradicionalmente después de Halloween, el 1 y 2 de noviembre.
