Lecture: Hidden in Plain Sight: Concealing Enslavement in American Visual Culture

Thursday, March 7, 6:00 PM, Windgate Center for Art + Design, Room 101.

This lecture is held in conjunction with the Arkansas Art History Symposium and is made possible by the generous support of the Windgate Foundation.

 

 

Rachel Stephens is an associate professor of art history at the University of Alabama whose research centers on the art and visual culture of the antebellum South. She received her PhD in art history from the University of Iowa. Her new book, Hidden in Plain Sight: Concealing Enslavement in American Visual Culture was published in the fall of 2023 by the University of Arkansas Press. It was supported by fellowships from Crystal Bridges, Yale University, and the National Gallery of Art.
