Dr. René A. Shroat-Lewis

Dr. René A. Shroat-Lewis is an assistant professor in the Department of Earth Sciences with a reputation as a passionate and innovative instructor.

Students and fellow faculty have commented on Shroat-Lewis’ excellence in teaching. She has been an instructor in the Donaghey Scholars Honors Program since 2015, an honor among faculty.

Shroat-Lewis is a sought-after collaborator on campus who has routinely co-taught courses such as Science and Society II and the Geology and Ecology of the Bahamas and Advanced Bahamas Research.

Shroat-Lewis also works to improve and update her teaching and professional skills so she can share it with her students. In 2017, she became one of only five people in the state to participate in former Vice President Al Gore’s national Climate Reality Leadership Corps, an opportunity she saw as a great educational resource for her class.

She uses technology to enhance her curriculum. For example, in 2014 she submitted a proposal to the Chancellor’s Committee on the Americans with Disabilities for a 3D printer to create models for students to better visualize earth concepts and materials. In 2015, she also used the 3D printer and other technological tools to improve labs for visually impaired students.

Shroat-Lewis received her Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Tennessee, and an M.S and B.S. in Geology from the University of North Carolina.
