Quills & Pixels Opens Submissions for 2021 Journal

The UA Little Rock Writer’s Network of the Rhetoric and Writing Department has opened submissions for the 2021 edition of Quills & Pixels, the university’s peer-reviewed journal.

Any UA Little Rock community member may submit any type of nonfiction writing by the deadline, Sept. 27, for a chance to become a published author.

UA Little Rock community members include UA Little Rock students, faculty, and staff, including people from UAMS, the William H. Bowen School of Law and the Clinton School of Public Service. Each member may submit up to five pieces for consideration.

The Editorial Team, which is made up of the members of the Editing for Publication class in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, also known as The Writer’s Network, decides what manuscripts make it through and which ones don’t.

“Members of Editing for Publication take the class to learn the manuscript acquisition and feedback process,” Dr. Barbara L’Eplattenier, Professor of the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, said. “They create the PR, read the submissions, accept or reject submissions, and write both acceptance and rejection letters to the authors.  In addition, they hold a face-to-face meeting with authors with whom they have been assigned to work.”

L’Eplattenier says students should submit their work to Quill & Pixels because they’re not just getting fame and glory, they’re also helping their fellow students.

“When you submit to Quills & Pixels, you get a chance to see your name in print, to go through the editing process and to support The Writers’ Network,” she said. “In addition, you get bragging rights with your friends and family; you also get an item on your resume.”

The Writer’s Network publishes creative nonfiction, personal essays, research essays, academic writing, journalistic features, technical communication and other genres. Students that wish to submit their work can visit https://www.ualr.edu/qp by the deadline, Sept. 27.

Anyone interested in taking the Editing for Publication class (RHET 4321), which is the first in a two-part sequence, can contact Dr. Barb L’Eplattenier of the Rhetoric and Writing Department.
