EARTHtalk lecture to discuss geology of Arkansas

George W. Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology

Dr. Thomas Colby, visiting assistant professor in the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Department of Earth Sciences, will discuss the geologic history of Europe and Arkansas and their relation to the construction of Pangea, during his EARTHtalk lecture Wednesday, Sept. 20.

“Earth’s history is literally written in the rocks, and geology is just learning to understand that language,” Colby stated.

Colby’s presentation, “From Europe to Arkansas: The Geologic Construction of a Supercontinent,” will explore Earth’s history as one massive continent, which theorists believed existed more than 300 million years ago.

His lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the George W. Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology auditorium.

Colby obtained his master’s degree in geological sciences from San Diego State University and his Ph.D. in geosciences from Boise State University.

His research interests of using techniques to investigate and understand aspects of collision mountain building are assisting him in his work on current projects in the western United States and Sardinia, Italy.
