Registration open for gifted and talented youth summer SLUFY program
The Summer Laureate University for Youth (SLUFY) program is accepting applications for this year’s educational event for high-ability students in kindergarten through sixth grade. This summer’s camp is set to run 12:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. daily from July 13-24.
Celebrating its 41th anniversary, SLUFY is a program of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Jodie Mahony Center for Gifted Education that gives high-ability students the opportunity to explore their interests and talents through classes in a variety of subjects. Students also will meet other talented students, forging friendships that last long beyond the summer program.
SLUFY 2020 will offer 25 new courses. Certified master teachers, graduate students in gifted and talented education, and other experts enthusiastically help these youths learn and grow in new, exciting ways. Courses offered involve fun, hands-on activities in math, science, the arts, social studies, and language arts, all targeted to specific age groups.
Kindergarteners will learn about languages, cultures, and food from around the world, the importance and variety of bugs, and measurement. First- and second-graders can choose between classes that include oceanography, astronomy, human anatomy, nutrition, engineering, and what it takes to be a great detective like Sherlock Holmes.
Meanwhile, third- and fourth-graders can enter the wizarding world of Harry Potter to learn about potions, culinary arts, and physics; see how NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineering rovers can be used to explore other worlds; and use Legos to design art pieces in the style of Picasso, Chihuly, and other legendary artists.
Students in fifth and sixth grade can explore the world of musical theater through “Give My Regards to Broadway” as well as explore medieval medicine, clothing, arts, science, and architecture in “Medieval Merriment.” In additional classes, students will learn about the Olympics, write poetry, and build engineering safety helmets
The cost to attend SLUFY is a $25 application fee and a $275 tuition fee, which includes all supplies and materials, field trips, and a T-shirt. Applications can be filled out online, emailed to giftedcenter@ualr.edu, or mailed to the UA Little Rock Jodie Mahony Center, 2801 S. University Ave., Dickinson Hall, Room 406, Little Rock, AR 72204.
Scholarships that cover the $275 tuition fee are available for applicants who demonstrate financial need and academic merit. Applications for the Martha Gaunt Bass Scholarship will be accepted from March 1 to May 1. Donations can be made to the scholarship fund through this online link.
