Since an early age, Maria Carvalhaes has always been concerned with helping those from underprivileged communities.
A native of Brazil, Carvalhaes started helping poor communities in her country at 16. Initially, she thought becoming a nurse was her path, but Carvalhaes realized it wasn’t for her.
“I wanted to help people in a more therapeutic way, so that is why I decided to do social work,” she said.

A University of Arkansas at Little Rock student attained gold level certification this February at the PIKE University Summit in Dallas, Texas.
Brandon Bagwell, a senior history major from Little Rock, was one of 10 men who earned this certification from Pike University, the education program of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Over 300 men attended the seminar.

Within its first month, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s first-ever food pantry has already helped 115 people and households, with no end in sight.
About 40 requests were made the first week the pantry opened. Since then, there have been about 25 requests per week.

A law professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has been named a member of the Alliance for Responsible Consumer Legal Funding (ARC) advisory council.
“The ARC sought my input to help it respond to regulatory attempts by the various states and to provide my opinion on the merits of those attempts and how the ARC should respond to those attempts,” said Terrence Cain, an associate professor at UALR’s William H. Bowen School of Law.

Staying near Little Rock to earn a doctorate is important to Hunter Wayland.
With her mother battling breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, Wayland chose the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she’s pursuing her degree.
“UALR is a good school,” she said. “They have a good chemistry program, and it’s close to home.”
