Jeff Gaffney, chair of UALR’s Department of Chemistry and his wife and co-researcher, Nancy Marley, share their home with 10 exotic and colorful birds — an umbrella cockatoo named Angel, a pair of African grey 
parrots Tasha and Ninah, blue and gold macaws Keebler and Bozo, and a family of blue front Amazon parrots Maxwell and Roxanne and their week-old chick. And he has a European starling named Beetlejuice and a breeding pair of zebra finches.
So it is no wonder Gaffney’s heart goes out to the thousands of sea birds caught in the thick goo of BP’s underwater gusher fouling the Gulf of Mexico shoreline from Florida to Texas.

Dr. Brian C. Berry, assistant professor of organic chemistry at UALR’s College of Science and Mathematics, has received a National Science Foundation grant of $150,000 over three years to help develop what could be the next generation of memory storage media.
Dr. Mark Seigar, assistant professor of physics and astronomy in UALR’s College of Science and Mathematics, was elected vice president of the Arkansas Academy of Science by members of the academy.

Dr. Robert L. Watson, chair of UALR’s Department of Biology for 19 years and acting dean of the College of Science and Mathematics for two years, died Saturday, April 24, at the age of 75.
Dr. Jerry Darsey, professor of chemistry in UALR’s College of Science and Mathematics, has received $77,000 from a federal Food and Drug Administration grant to develop methods to track estrogen mimicking compounds in various products and assess how use of the products affect women.

Dr. Michael T. Ledbetter, a former science officer at the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will present a lecture Monday, April 12, showing evidence that the Earth is warming and what steps should be taken to reverse the trend.
