The Fringe Festival is at the center of the Theater Arts vision for the integration of production and pedagogy. Drawing on plays written during the fall 2020 semester in First-Year Experience and Page to Stage, the six central scripts at the heart of the Fringe Festival were directed, filmed, and performed under the lead of students currently developing their craft in Directing I, Stage Production, Costume Techniques, Stagecraft, Contemporary Theater, and several senior capstone projects.

Unique in its student-centered approach to design and production, the Fringe Festival highlights the innovation of necessity. Conceived for and created in a global pandemic and theatrical quarantine, the various scripts explore the contemporary physical and emotional state of being through a metaphorical and literal lens of distance and space.

While exploring contemporary and pressing topics like mental health, the social construction of life and death, and the polarization of America, the Fringe Festival is also an act of catharsis–providing the intellectual and emotional space to release ourselves and appreciate the important role that art plays in helping us understand and cope with the human condition.
