Scholarships

Every year, the History Department awards scholarships to qualified students. Visit the UA Little Rock Scholarships home for application information.

The following scholarships are open to current UA Little Rock students. An endowment is also available for guest lecturers and special projects of the History Department.

Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

Booker Worthen Scholarship. Awarded to a full-time or part-time UA Little Rock history major with a minimum of 80 credit hours. Academic accomplishment and financial need are considered.

Craig Powell Memorial Scholarship. Awarded to a history major with a minimum of 54 credit hours, the last 15 or more having been taken at UA Little Rock. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. The applicant must demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning. Financial need is also considered.

David O. Demuth Scholarship. Awarded to a history major with a minimum of 54 credit hours, the last 15 hours or more having been taken at UA Little Rock. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. The applicant’s potential for further study in history is considered.

Dr. Edward Madden and Lucy Dorothy Anson III Award. Given to the outstanding graduating history major as selected by the faculty of the History Department.

Lee and Paula Johnson Travel Scholarship. To assist students in pursuing a study abroad program offered by the Department of History. The recipient shall be a full-time student majoring in history, and either a junior or senior-level student. Applicants for this scholarship are to submit a statement of goals associated with proposed travel. Applications based on course of study, academic accomplishment, and financial need.

Martha Sawrie Stephenson Endowed Scholarship. Awarded to a full-time or part-time student who is enrolled in a minimum of six hours. The recipient must have a declared major in English, history, or political science. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA no lower than 2.5 and no higher than 3.5. Because the scholarship is renewable, it shall not be revoked if the student’s GPA exceeds 3.5 in subsequent years. All things being equal, extreme financial need shall be the determining factor in the selection process.

Richard B. Dixon Undergraduate Scholarship. Awarded to a history major with a minimum of 54 credit hours, the last 15 or more having been taken at UA Little Rock. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. The applicant must demonstrate a positive attitude toward learning.

Ruby M. Duke Ancient History Award. Awarded to a student majoring in history with a demonstrated interest in ancient history.

Scholarships for Graduate Students

Little Rock Nine Endowed Scholarship. Awarded to a graduate student who is focused on race relations and community development. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. Preference given to students who demonstrate leadership potential. In addition to the scholarship application, applicants must submit two essays: one that is biographical in nature and one that focuses on career goals and a specific plan of study. Each essay should be approximately 500 words in length.

C. Fred Williams Scholarship in Public History. Awarded to a full- or part-time graduate student enrolled in the Public History M.A.. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be considered.

Jack Freshour Graduate Scholarship. Awarded to a full-time graduate student who is newly enrolled and has an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or a continuing graduate student with a GPA of 3.25.
