Hangouts Meet: video conferencing at your fingertips

To help education institutions stay in touch during the COVID-19 pandemic, Google has enabled a number of premium features. Hangouts Meet sessions can now host up to 250 participants, be live-streamed to up to 100,000 participants, and recorded!

Update: New remote learning controls coming soon for Education

Google just announced new Hangouts Meet controls for educators coming in the next 2-3 weeks. The new controls include restrictions on who can mute or remove meeting participants, as well as who can re-join a customized/nicknamed meeting after all participants (including the meeting owner) have left.

Hangouts Meet is a video conferencing service that enables you to join virtual meetings via audio, video, chat, and screen sharing. There are no time limits, and telephone dial-in to a U.S. phone number is provided; dial-out is free to the United States and Canada.

Hangouts Meet is one of the core services in G Suite for Education, which means it is free to the entire university. While Hangouts Meet is primarily used with a web browser, you may also use Android and iOS mobile-device apps or Chrome devices.

Joining a meeting

There are a number of ways to join a Hangouts Meet session, including

Re-usable, custom meeting URLs

Did you know you can create a Hangouts Meet URL with your own custom meeting nickname? And then you can re-use it as a standing meeting room for university participants.

  1. Visit
  2. Select Join or Start a meeting.
  3. When prompted, enter a custom meeting nickname.
    A nickname is a meaningful phase, such as “our-meeting”.
  4. Select Continue and then Join now.

You may now bookmark the meeting URL and re-use it later. The meeting will retain the nickname.
