Department of Music to host healthy computer posture workshop Oct. 12
Learn how to prevent strain and injury while using the computer during the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Department of Music’s upcoming workshop, “A Call to Arms! Healthy Keyboarding for Computer Users.”
Linda Holzer, professor of music and coordinator of classical piano studies, will lead the workshop Thursday, Oct. 12, from 12:15 to 1 p.m. in room 112 of the Fine Arts building.
“As long as there have been keyboards, there have been complaints about arm pain, neck pain, back pain, and repetitive strain injuries,” Holzer said. “In the music world, a great deal of study over several centuries has been devoted to helping healthy keyboarding techniques, developing good coordination, and playing music at a keyboard in ways that prevent injury.”
While attending Northwestern University in Illinois, Holzer was made aware of the importance of having good posture and a healthy technique while playing the piano.
“When I became a computer user, I realized that the principles that apply for pianists also carry over to computer users,” Holzer said.
Throughout the workshop, Holzer will present participants with several technology wellness tips, including methods on how to prevent repetitive strain injuries, such as tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome, warm-up exercises to relax the body, examples of unhealthy postures, and ergonomic tools to help computer users better develop the appropriate posture.
UA Little Rock students who are not music majors, but wish to attend the event, must register online. To do so, log on to MyUALR before clicking the registration link. The presentation can also be viewed online.
