Policy

A no-cost extension extends the end date of a sponsored project; it does not increase the sponsored funding. All no-cost extension requests must be routed through the UALR Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) for approval before the sponsor is contacted. No-cost extensions are subject to federal, sponsor, and university rules and regulations and, thus, are not guaranteed. If ORSP approves the request, they will work with the sponsor to process the extension.

Explanation

While sponsors expect principal investigators (PI) to complete projects by the stipulated end date, occasionally extra time is needed. A no-cost extension gives the PI extra time to complete the project without additional funds being provided by the sponsor. Although requests may not be made for the sole purpose of spending remaining funds, you may expend remaining funds during the no-cost extension period.

ORSP will determine if a no-cost extension request is allowable and if it requires sponsor approval. If a no-cost extension is approved, all compliance approvals (e.g., human or animal subjects) must remain current through the extension period.

Responsibilities and Procedures

Principal Investigators or their designees must contact ORSP to request a no-cost extension at least 45 days before the original project end date or as stipulated in the award document provided by the sponsoring agency.

ORSP will review the request and, if necessary, contact the sponsor for approval.
