On this day in Osage country, The Daily Journal-Capital published an article announcing that the Wah-Sha-She newspaper won first place in a national competition.
The Wah-Sha-She newspaper was the official student newspaper of Pawhuska High School. The National Scholastic Press Association sponsored the competition which had over 350 entries that year. Newspapers were judged based on the breadth of the news field, the structure of news stories and leads, the quality of English, the make-up, the quality of style of literary material, humor, advertising, editorials, sports stories, headlines, featured stories, and other characteristics such as the management of the staff, initiative, and originality.
This year’s winning was also significant, because it marked the fourth consecutive year that Wah-Sha-She took home a national title.
The Wah-Sha-She school publication made other achievements that same year, including:
- Winning first in Osage County
- First in class E in the state competition sponsored by the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical college
- First in class C in the national contest conducted by Columbia University
- First in class C in the state competition sponsored by the University of Oklahoma.
