Campus Recycling

The UA Little Rock campus recycles a variety of materials with the goal of helping the planet. Facilities Management collects a large portion of recyclable materials on campus and sends them to local facilities. Other items are sent to state Marketing & Redistribution, or are collected during special events by third-party contractors.

Currently, the campus recycling infrastructure includes bins for common materials located across campus and in most buildings. In addition, much of what is used for the day-to-day maintenance of the campus is also recycled or disposed of in an environmentally-safe way.

Recycling bins are located on campus for the following materials:

  • Aluminum cans
  • Batteries
  • Electronics and fluorescent lighting
  • Furniture
  • Motor oil
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastic bottles
  • Printer cartridges
  • Tires

How Can You Help?

Members of the UA Little Rock community can help in many ways to improve campus sustainability practices.

Use the recycling bins and receptacles on campus

If you have paper products, plastic bottles, or aluminum cans that need to be disposed of, find a recycling container rather than throw these materials away. Keep in mind that everything that goes into a trash bin goes to a landfill rather than being reused for sustainability efforts. By taking time to recycle materials, you are helping your university become more environmentally friendly.

Save other recyclable materials or take them to Facilities Management

UA Little Rock recycles a large number of materials that do not have designated recycling bins. By taking batteries, printer cartridges, and electronics to Facilities Management, you can prevent environmentally toxic items from being put into the ground and doing further damage to our local ecosystems. Facilities Management also partners with state Marketing & Redistribution to recycle and reuse larger items such as furniture.

Get involved with campus sustainability initiatives

So, students, staff, and faculty can get involved in sustainability efforts across campus in many ways. Because sustainability is such an important issue, the UA Little Rock Committee on Sustainability hosts events each year, including Earth Day projects, educational outreach, and research opportunities. Students can submit sustainability project ideas during a yearly competition. Winners receive funding for implementation.

You can also get involved in campus-wide recycling drives, trash cleanup events, and volunteer opportunities in sustainability-related areas.
