Teaching
Dr. Edma Delgado teaches Elementary and Intermediate Spanish as well as upper-level courses on Latin American Literatures and Cultures. Students in her classes will study literature, folklore, mythology, film, and other cultural practices to help them develop their Spanish language skills and to broaden their understanding of Latin American and U.S. Latino cultures. In the past, Dr. Delgado has offered special topic seminars including the courses U.S. Latino Literatures and Cultures, Afro-Latino Literatures and Cultures, U.S. Latino Drama and Performance, Groundbreaking Women of Latin America, and Narco-Cultures.
Many students are interested in using their Spanish language skills in the workplace. Her skills classes incorporate activities such as service-learning, reports on prospective careers, resumé building, and mock job interviews to help students become career ready. Additionally, Dr. Delgado provides a robust offering of Spanish courses for Professional Purposes. She regularly teaches an introductory course on Translation Studies and has previously taught special-topics courses such as Medical Spanish, Spanish for Legal Professions, and Business Spanish.
Research
Dr. Delgado researches militant Christian movements in Mexico. Her recent scholarship has focused on the Cristero Rebellion. During this conflict, Mexican Catholics took up arms to resist anti-Catholic legislation promoted by the Mexican government. Her work analyzes how the Cristero Rebellion is represented in popular culture and in film. In 2019, she received a Middle Eastern Studies Grant to begin research on how Syrian and Lebanese immigrants are assimilated into Brazilian culture in the novels of author Jorge Amado.
Community Service
Dr. Delgado is the faculty mentor to the UA Little Rock Chapter of The League of United Latin American Citizens. She regularly collaborates with the Little Rock Chapter of LULAC, The Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas (Springdale), and Mamás Unidas to develop and support programs aimed at increasing the educational attainment of Hispanic and non-traditional students in Arkansas. From 2016 to 2019, Dr. Delgado served on the Board of Directors of El Zocalo Immigrant Resource Center and she currently sits on the board of the Arkansas Humanities Council.
