CHASSE Announces October College Events
The College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education (CHASSE) at UA Little Rock has announced its scheduled events for the month of October during the fall 2024 semester. The lineup of events for the remainder of the semester can be found on the college’s website.
Department of Applied Communication
Applied Communication Leadership Lecture: Melissa Johnston: The Department of Applied Communication will host its annual fall leadership lecture at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15 via Zoom.
Senior Director of Talent Development at First Orion, Melissa Johnston will give a lecture titled, “The Crucial Role of Organizational Culture During Times of Crisis and Change.”
Johnston holds a master’s degree in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication from UA Little Rock, and she currently serves as an adjunct instructor for the applied communication department.

Department of History
Evenings with History: Dr. Roy Ritchie, “Medieval America”: To kick off the 2024-25 Evenings with History lecture series, special guest speaker Dr. Roy Ritchie will be giving a presentation on Medieval America at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1 at the Arkansas Historic Museum (200 E. Third St.) in Little Rock.
Ritchie, the W. M. Keck Foundation Director of Research Emeritus with Huntington Library in San Marino, California, will explore the flourishing cultures in America prior to European colonization.
Light refreshments will be served at 7 p.m., and the lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ottenheimer Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

School of Art and Design
“Emily Moll Wood: New Work”: An exhibition by Emily Moll Wood, a UA Little Rock alumna, will be unveiled on Monday, Oct. 7 in the Focus Gallery in the Windgate Center of Art + Design. “Emily Moll Wood: New Work” will be on display until Nov. 1.
A reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 5 p.m. in the Windgate Center of Art + Design to celebrate a number of current exhibitions, including “Emily Moll Wood: New Work,” “School of Art and Design: Creative Currents,” and “Michele Noiset: Analogies and Absurdities.”
Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public. The Windgate Center of Art + Design galleries are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All galleries on the UA Little Rock campus are closed on university holidays.

School of Literary and Performing Arts
October Chamber and Wind Ensemble Concert: Dr. Nickolas Doshier, the director of music education at UA Little Rock, will lead the October Chamber and Wind Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The concert will take place in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts building on the UA Little Rock campus. The event is free and open to the public.
UA Little Rock Choirs and UA Little Rock Percussion Collaborative Concert: The School of Literary and Performing Arts is hosting a new collaborative concert titled “Celestial Awakening” that combines aspects of the school’s music program.
The UA Little Rock Choirs and the UA Little Rock Percussion Ensemble will come together for the first time for a performance at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7. The concert will take place in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, and the event is free and open to the public.
Not only is the performance a collaboration between two groups in the music program, but it also brings in aspects of the English program within the School of Literary and Performing Arts. With a setlist that features poetry set to music, students will also interact with and discuss the pieces prior to the Oct. 7 performance.
Visiting Writers Series: An Afternoon with Grant Faulkner: The English program in the School of Literary and Performing Arts looks forward to welcoming writer Grant Faulkner to the UA Little Rock campus.
Faulkner will give a lecture at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11 in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. The former executive director of the National Novel Writing Month and the co-founder of “100 Word Story,” Faulkner has published a number of short stories and books.

SLPA’s Jazz in the Alley: In a first-time partnership with UA Little Rock Downtown, the School of Literary and Performing Arts is hosting “Jazz in the Alley.”
The outdoor concert will begin at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11 in the UA Little Rock Downtown space. The event also takes place during the Central Arkansas Library System’s 2nd Friday Art Night.
UA Little Rock students and employees with a Trojan’s U-Pass have the opportunity to take the Rock Region METRO bus to and from the event. Information on picking up your free U-Pass sticker can be found online.
Guest Vocalists Performance: Jonathan and Christina Ray: As part of a guest artist residency, Jonathan and Christina Ray will perform at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17 in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.
A musical duo based in Missouri, the Rays founded Landlocked Opera in Kansas City. Both Jonathan and Christina continue to perform, teach, and are active in the music community.
This event is free and open to the public.
Theatre Production: Molíere’s “The Imaginary Invalid”: To round out the list of events hosted by the School of Literary and Performing Arts for the month of October is the theatre program’s production of Molíere’s “The Imaginary Invalid” directed by Ben Grimes.
Shows will start at 7:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday, Oct. 23 through Saturday, Oct. 26. There will be a 2:30 p.m. show on Sunday, Oct. 27. All showings will be in Haislip Theatre in the Center for Performing Arts on the UA Little Rock campus. While the performances are free and open to the public, reservations are required. Information on how to reserve your seats will become available on the School of Literary and Performing Arts’s calendar of events.
The final play by French playwright Molíere is the story of Argan, a wealthy hypochondriac who wants his daughter to marry the son of a doctor in order to gain easier access to prescriptions and cheaper medical bills. The play was co-adapted by Oded Gross and Tracy Young with music by Paul Pendergast and lyrics by Oded Gross, Tracy Young, and Paul Pendergast.
