Professor Avinash Thombre has been fascinated by communication and relationships for as long as he can remember. He recalls reading the newspaper while growing up in India and having a desire to go into journalism. However, due to cultural expectations, he began pursuing a degree in the sciences. Before he graduated with his Master’s degree, he decided to take a job for a newspaper. “That was like a dream fulfilled,” Professor Thombre states. “I was just on top of the world.” While he was a journalist, the professor discovered a desire to change the world. He believed that change was attainable through the use of communicating effectively with others.
After seven years of working in journalism, Professor Thombre took this desire for enacting change and pursued a degree in Communication at the University of New Mexico. His goal was to research, and after he completed his degree, he began looking for universities where he could utilize and grow his knowledge. This is how the University of Arkansas at Little Rock obtained our very own “Communication Yogi.” Professor Thombre’s belief that communication is all about relationships has led him to his topic for the Leadership Lecture Series on September 27, “Embracing Super Hybridity”.
Hybrid culture is the result of globalization. Technology has allowed humans to connect in ways we never have before. This, argues Professor Thombre, creates a potential for positive change. He is excited to share the research on which he has spent the last four years. During his lecture, he will cover such ideas as examples of hybrid culture, why it’s happening, and how leaders can promote it. “We all should embrace each other,” Professor Thombre states.
