2023 Summer Research and Creative Activities Fellowship

The College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education invites proposals for the 2023 Summer Research and Creative Activities Fellowships.

$4,000 will be awarded to five CHASSE faculty members to support their research in Summer 2023.

CHASSE faculty who will be employed full time in Fall 2023 are eligible to apply. Funding recommendations will be made by the CHASSE Research, Creative Works, and Awards Committee.

Award funds will be dispersed in direct payments to selected faculty members. Successful applicants will provide the Dean’s office with a follow-up report and give a public presentation about the project during the Fall 2023 semester.

Application Requirements

Applications should be written in language understandable by non-specialists; please avoid disciplinary jargon. All application materials should be included in a single PDF.

  1. Cover Letter (250 words maximum)
  2. Project Abstract (150 words maximum)
  3. Project Overview (1,000 words maximum)
  4. Summary curriculum vitae, including relevant professional activities (one page maximum)
  5. If the project involves human subject research, a copy of your IRB protocol (An approved IRB protocol will be required before funds will be dispersed, although projects can be selected before IRB approval has been obtained.)

In your project overview, abstract, and cover letter, please explain:

  • The fundamental problem or question the project addresses
  • The final form the work will take (are you writing an article, recording a performance, etc.?)
  • The methodology or approach to the problem/question

  • The value this project brings to the faculty member’s career trajectory and to the college

  • If applicable, information about matching funding from other sources
  • If applicable, disclosure of financial interests in the project (e.g., if this is part of an ongoing grant, being paid for associated work, etc.)

  • The long-term prospects of the project. This includes but is not limited to future funding and scholarly products (e.g., published papers, books, or public exhibits/performances)
  • The contribution of the project to the applicant’s scholarly/artistic career and its value to the college’s mission
  • The justification for how the funds will support the faculty member’s research
