Alumni Spotlight: Joseph Fischer

Today’s Alumni Spotlight features a stellar former student who was recently accepted into the Film and Media Studies master’s program at Columbia University.

Joseph Fischer, originally from Hot Springs Village, graduated in May 2018 with a BA in Mass Communication with a media production emphasis and a BA in Psychology. Joseph currently lives in Fayetteville, where he is the Media Specialist for Drennan Insurance Marketing. That job keeps him busy with a variety of tasks, including audio/visual set-ups at events, implementing video production into marketing strategies and creating advertisements for clients.

Joseph also is a 2018 Telluride Student Symposium Alumni. He was accepted into the program during his last semester at UA Little Rock, and he attended the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado last fall. “It was the best weekend of my life and had a significant impact on my future aspirations and goals,” he said.

Joseph, who finished his studies at UA Little Rock with a 4.0 GPA, will begin school at Columbia this fall.

Who was a UA Little Rock faculty member who had a strong impact on you?
“Professor Chris Robinson has had a tremendous impact on my life. He has been my advisor, teacher, and most importantly my mentor. I cannot thank him enough for all of his guidance and assistance that he has given me in the last year.”

What made you decide to seek a master’s degree in film studies?
“I always had a love for film but was not sure how I wanted to refine that passion and love. Professor Robinson’s classes helped me discover the academic world surrounding movies and it gave me an outlet to channel my love for cinema.”

What advice would you give to current Mass Comm students?
“In the words of Werner Herzog, ‘Read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read…’”
