Alumnus Shumate wins dissertation prize

UA Little Rock alumnus Dr. Rich Shumate has been named the 2019 winner of the American Journalism Historians Association’s Margaret A. Blanchard Doctoral Dissertation Prize.

Shumate, who earned his master’s degree from the School of Mass Communication in 2014, received the prize for the doctoral dissertation he later completed at the University of Florida. He is now an assistant professor in the journalism sequence at Western Kentucky University’s School of Media.

The Blanchard Prize is awarded yearly by the AJHA for the best doctoral dissertation dealing with mass communication history. Shumate’s dissertation topic was “Elite Voices and Irritated Conservatives: Pathways leading to the Perception of Liberal Media Bias Arising from Elite News Media Coverage of the Emergence of Movement Conservatism, 1960-1964.”
