General scholarships

CSSC Founding Dean’s Community Engaged Research Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time undergraduate student in the College of Social Sciences and Communications. The applicant will be a student interested in collaborating with a CSSC faculty member in community engaged research. Letter of recommendation from a faculty member and a description of the research project must be submitted. Preference will be given to junior or senior level students. Applicant must demonstrate academic accomplishment and financial need.

John E. Jacob Scholarship
Awarded to a sophomore or above undergraduate student in the College of Social Sciences and Communications. Student must have at least a 3.0 college GPA. Special considerations for applicants that demonstrate financial need. Student must be committed to working for a cause-oriented nonprofit organization, including but not limited to those seeking to strengthen public health, economic opportunity, environmental quality and/or civil rights. Applicants will submit an essay about a specific social, economic, political or health-related cause they care about.

Julien and Margaret Mirivel Positive Research Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student undergraduate or graduate student majoring in a degree in the College of Social Sciences and Communications. Preference will be given to students with a major in Applied Communication who are junior or senior level students. Applicant must demonstrate academic accomplishment and financial need.

The Last Mile Program Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student undergraduate or graduate student majoring in a degree in the College of Social Sciences and Communications. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. The Recipient(s) shall have a GPA of at least 2.0.

Laverne Sheard-Britton Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student in the College of Social Sciences and Communications. Preference will be given to freshman level students who are from a single parent home. Applicant must demonstrate academic accomplishment and financial need.

Rosa Pfeifer Isacson Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student in the College of Social Sciences and Communications. Applicant must have extreme financial need and must have demonstrated a commitment to their course of study.

The September Fund Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a part-time or full-time student who is the child of an Arkansas first responder, to include all law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMTs. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Affirmative Risk Management Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate majoring in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Clarence and Judy Albers Quality Writing Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a graduate student beginning his or her first year of graduate study with a minimum of six hours of enrollment in Rhetoric and Writing with a combined emphasis in non-fiction and editing. Applicants must demonstrate academic accomplishment based on academic history and review by the selection committee of an application letter and program application writing portfolio or other writing portfolio emphasizing non-fiction writing and editing.

Department of Rhetoric and Writing Emergency Fund
To provide emergency assistance for any education-related expense for students who are full or part-time majoring in an undergraduate or graduate degree offered by the Department of Rhetoric and Writing. Academic Accomplishment will be considered.

Donna Barkan Jensen Writing Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time junior or senior majoring in Professional and Technical Writing with an interest in nonfiction. Applicants must supply a three-item portfolio including a full explanation of each item by the application deadline. Applicants must also supply a letter of application explaining how and why they qualify for the scholarship and how it will aid them in achieving specific career and/or educational objectives. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

David and Lucille Chandler Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The recipient shall be a full-time or part-time student minoring in Rhetoric and Writing. Preference will be given to junior and senior level students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

George C. Douthit Endowed Scholarship
The recipient shall be a full-time or part-time student majoring in Professional and Technical Writing or Journalism.

Oliver-Breeze-Kennedy Undergraduate Scholarship
Awarded to two established junior or senior students enrolled full-time in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing: one studying technical communication and one studying digital literacies. Applicants must supply a three-item portfolio including a full explanation of each item by the application deadline. Applicants must also supply a letter of application explaining how and why they qualify for the scholarship and how it will aid them in achieving specific career and/or educational objectives.

Arkansas Broadcasters Association Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to an incoming junior or senior in the Radio, Television, and Film Program. Student must have at least a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Each applicant’s character, overall performance and promise in the broadcasting field will also be considered.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Scholarship
Awarded to students with at least sophomore standing who are interested in newspaper journalism and have a journalism major or minor.

Arkansas Fly Fishers Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student who are majoring in a degree in the School of Mass Communication. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Arkansas Newspaper Foundation Scholarship
Awarded to students of at least sophomore standing who are majoring or minoring in journalism. Applicant must demonstrate academic promise, financial need, and interest in the newspaper field.

Dan and Johnnie Winn Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student in the School of Mass Communication pursuing a journalism or radio degree. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Edith Woods Sweezy Memorial Fund
Awarded to graduate or undergraduate students with a major or minor in journalism who are interested in practicing print journalism in Arkansas or in the South. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and have financial need.

George C. Douthit Endowed Scholarship
The recipient shall be a full-time or part-time student majoring in Professional and Technical Writing or Journalism.

Governor Orval E. Faubus Scholarship
Awarded to a journalism major or minor.

Harry Ashmore Journalism Scholarship
Awarded to a junior level student studying journalism.

Herbert and Gertrude Latkin Scholarship Fund
Awarded to graduate or undergraduate journalism majors. Financial need will be considered.

HOLA! Arkansas Hispanic Media Scholarship
Applicant must be a junior or senior level Hispanic student enrolled in a minimum of nine credit hours and seeking a degree in Mass Communications. Along with the scholarship application, student must include one paragraph describing their Hispanic heritage. Recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA for renewed eligibility. Scholarship is renewable, but students must re-apply annually. The scholarship recipient may also serve as an intern at Today’s THV based on availability of positions. Recipients will also have opportunities to work with Hola Arkansas at community events.

IABC/Arkansas Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in Journalism, Public Relations, or Speech Communications. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors level students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be equally considered.

J. Irby Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time graduate student in the School of Mass Communication pursuing a Master of Arts in Mass Communication. Applicant must be enrolled in the summer semester. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be equally considered.

Jane and John Thompson Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Journalism with a demonstrated interest in investigative reporting. Preference given to junior and senior level undergraduate students as well as graduate students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Jerol Garrison Journalism Scholarship
Awarded to full-time or part-time students with a major or minor in journalism. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered along with dedication to the profession.

K. A. Engel Scholarship
Awarded to a journalism major or minor.

RD Doubleday Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in Radio, Television, and Film with an interest in Broadcast Management. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Robert Hamilton Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time student majoring in Journalism or Radio, TV and Film with preference given to junior and senior level single parent students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Roy Mitchell Scholarship Fund
Awarded to juniors and seniors. Emphasis in studies must be in broadcast journalism. Academic accomplishment, financial need, and the desire to serve as an intern with KARK-TV in Little Rock will all be considered.

Signal Media Scholarship Award
Awarded to a student to provide assistance for any education related expenses, including tuition, books, or fees, while pursuing a degree in communications at UA Little Rock.

Steve Stephens Golden Mike Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in broadcast journalism. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. Preference will be given to a sophomore.

Television Broadcasters of Arkansas Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in mass communication with a goal of pursuing a career in broadcast television. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

TreDay.com Scholarship Project
Awarded to an Arkansas high school graduate currently pursuing a degree in the School of Mass Communication. Applicants must do research on a specified topic and present a news story in one of three formats: radio – a 30 second audiotape on cassette or compact disc; television – a 30 second videotape on VHS or DVD or newspaper – a 1,000 word typed and printed article. News stories may be longer but no shorter than the minimum requirements. Topics will be available through the School of Mass Communication. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is March 7 each year.

William K. Rutherford Freedom of Information Scholarship
Awarded to a junior, senior, or graduate student with a major or minor in journalism who has a 3.0 GPA. Applicant must show professional promise, participate in journalism organizations, and continue to work and be interested in the Freedom of Information Act. Financial need will be considered.

Department of Applied Communication

Dr. Angela Laird Brenton Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a full or part-time Speech Communication (Applied Communication) Major, either BA or MA program with preference to junior and senior level students, or first or second year graduate students. A preferred 3.0 GPA, and financial need will be strongly considered.

The Bridgeway Scholarship
Provides a paid internship for one student for one semester per semester pursuing or furthering a degree in the Department of Applied Communication. Recipient shall be ful or part-time undergraduate. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Lance Thompson Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a full or part-time Applied Communication Major, with preference given to students with an interest in the visual, literary, or performing arts. Students must write a paragraph about their view of communication in relation to ethics and the arts (visual, literary, or performing). Academic Accomplishment will be considered.

Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in Criminal Justice with preference given to graduate students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. This scholarship is renewable, but the recipient must re-apply annually.

David O. Dillinger Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in Criminal Justice with preference given to senior level or graduate students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. This scholarship is renewable, but the recipient must re-apply annually.

Harold R. Zook Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in Criminal Justice. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. Preference will be given to applicants who are at the top of their graduating class of Metropolitan Career Technical Center.

John A. Boyeskie Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in Criminal Justice with preference given to second-year graduate students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.

Judge Lee Munson Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Criminal Justice. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. Preference to students who work for the Little Rock Police Department.

Louie Caudell Rotary Club of Little Rock Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time Little Rock Police Department officers who are majoring in Criminal Justice at UA Little Rock.

Melissa Ma Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in Criminal Justice or a related field with the intention of working within the law enforcement community. Preference will be given to current police officers. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered along with dedication to the profession.

Randy and Dianne Johnson Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student majoring in Criminal Justice. Preference will be given to junior and senior level students. A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA is required, and financial need will be strongly considered.

Rick Finley Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to full-time or part-time graduate or undergraduate students pursuing a degree in law enforcement or a related field. Applicants must have financial need, good academic standing, and be the child of a current or retired police officer or child of a police officer slain in the line of duty.

Rob Williams Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to graduate or undergraduate students pursuing a degree in law enforcement with consideration given to academic standing, child of current or retired police officer slain in the line of duty, or current police officer. Only the most serious and highly qualified students will be considered for this scholarship. Applicant must display the level of professionalism and social awareness that will make them a leader among law enforcement officials.

Recipient shall be a full-time or part-time UA Little Rock student majoring in sociology/anthropology. Selection shall be based on academic accomplishment with financial need as a secondary consideration.

Stonewall Scholarship
Recipient shall be a full-time or part-time student in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences who demonstrates knowledge of GLBT history and current events, as well as leadership in advancing GLBT civil rights. The applicant should have a record of community leadership or demonstrate leadership capabilities. Academic accomplishment will be strongly considered. Financial need will also be a consideration.

Awarded to a full-time or part-time political science major. Preference will be given to junior and senior level students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered. This scholarship is renewable but the recipient must reapply annually.

Jeffrey C. Ledbetter Endowed Scholarship
Awarded to full-time or part-time student majoring in Political Science. Preference will be given to junior and senior level students. Evidence of an interest in public service will be the primary awarding consideration. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be considered. The scholarship is renewable; the recipient must re-apply annually.

Martha Sawrie Stephenson Endowed Scholarship*
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student who is enrolled in a minimum of six hours. The recipient must have a declared major in English, History, or Political Science. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA no lower than 2.5 and no higher than 3.5. Because the scholarship is renewable, it shall not be revoked if the student’s GPA exceeds 3.5 in subsequent years. All things being equal, extreme financial need shall be the determining factor in the selection process.

Tim Massanelli Endowed Scholarship for Political Science
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student who is majoring in Political Science. Preference will be given to junior and senior level students. Academic accomplishment and financial need will be strongly considered.
