Campus Recycling

The UA Little Rock campus recycles a wide variety of materials, with a growing sustainability infrastructure that continues to make it easier to participate in helping the planet. A large portion of recyclable materials on campus are collected by Facilities Management and are sent to local facilities. Other, more specific items are sent to state Marketing & Redistribution, or are collected during special events by third-party contractors.

UA Little Rock Facilities Management is involved with a significant portion of recycling on the university campus. Currently, the recycling infrastructure includes bins for common materials, which are located across campus and in most buildings. In addition, much of what is used for the day-to-day maintenance of the campus is also recycled or disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

Recycling bins can be found across campus for the following materials:

  • Aluminum Cans
  • Batteries
  • Electronics and Fluorescent Lighting
  • Furniture
  • Motor Oil
  • Paper and Cardboard
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Printer Cartridges
  • Tires

Telephone Books – Recycling drives are held once or twice per school year (depending on need). Temporary recycling containers are set up across campus during these events.

How can I help?

There are a number of ways that members of the UA Little Rock community can help out with the ongoing efforts to improve campus sustainability practices.

Use the recycling bins and receptacles located around campus

If you have paper products, plastic bottles, or aluminum cans that need to be disposed of, make the extra effort to find a recycling container rather than throwing these common materials away. While trash bins may be easier to reach, everything that is put in them goes straight to a landfill rather than being reused for sustainability efforts. By taking a few extra steps when you need to dispose of recyclable materials, you can do your part to help your university become more environmentally friendly.

Save other recyclable materials or take them to Facilities Management

UA Little Rock recycles a large number of materials that do not have designated recycling bins. By taking batteries, printer cartridges, and electronics to Facilities Management, you can prevent these environmentally toxic items from being put into the ground and doing further damage to our local ecosystems. Facilities Management also partners with state Marketing & Redistribution to recycle and reuse larger items such as furniture.

Get involved with campus sustainability initiatives

There are a number of ways that students, staff, and faculty can get involved in sustainability efforts across campus. The UA Little Rock Committee on Sustainability hosts a number of events each year, including Earth Day projects, educational outreach, and research opportunities. There is also a yearly competition in which students can submit sustainability project ideas, with the winners receiving funding for implementation.

Other ways of getting involved include campus-wide recycling drives, trash cleanup events, and volunteer opportunities in any number of sustainability-related areas.
