The Computer Science Department hosted its second town hall style meeting Thursday, September 5. Ashley French of the Arkansas Center for Data Sciences began by speaking on the differences between apprenticeships and internships. The ACDS currently has opportunities for data analysts as well as for cybersecurity analysts. Ashley can also help with resume preparations. Next, Amy Frets of EIT Student Services announced an undergraduate scholarship opportunity as well as an EIT Job Fair October 10, 12PM – 3 PM at the Jack Stephens Center. Pre-register and submit your resume and receive an EIT padfolio. Chance Melby, President of the UA Little Rock Cybersecurity Club, gave information on career opportunities as well as on learning and teaching opportunities for club members. The club meet Friday from 2PM- 5 PM in EIT 417.
After that, Dr. Jan Springer introduced the Emerging Analytics Center and spoke of opportunities for undergraduate students, which are atypical of University research centers such as the EAC. The EAC is supporting 24 undergraduate students this Fall. Dr. Mariofanna Milanova presented on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. She showed salaries of typical jobs dealing with AI – the numbers are very attractive. Dr. Albert Baker finished up with a brief explanation of the modernization of undergraduate curriculum. Over 50 requests were recently approved by the Undergraduate Committee. Linear Algebra will be added as a core math requirement, and 4 new classes are added to be more consistent with peer institutions – Computer Networks, Theory of Computation, AI, and Distributed Computing.
