Graduate Certificate

Graduate Coordinator : Dr. Annie Childers

Graduate students in a variety of subject matter disciplines conduct research that requires knowledge in applied statistics. There is a growing demand for proficiency in applied statistics in many fields including biology, medicine, pharmaceutics, chemistry, education, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, environmental science, agriculture, urban planning, business, engineering, and industry. Such students may wish to demonstrate proficiency in applied statistics as it may be useful when looking for meaningful employment opportunities, in addition to helping them become better researchers in their chosen fields. In order to strengthen their educational programs and the quality of graduate education, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics has been developed.

Educational Objectives

The overall goal of the Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics program is to prepare students for competitive careers or further graduate studies in disciplines that incorporate statistical analysis. By completing the Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics program, students will be prepared to enter a technical and growing career in many fields. The program has the following specific objectives:

1. To help prepare graduates for research careers in their chosen fields.

2. To provide training in statistics focused on developing data analysis skills and an ability to explore the field of applied statistics.

3. To provide graduate students with broad knowledge in a wide range of statistical application areas with employable, highly sought after skills in applied statistics demanded by government agencies, universities, consulting firms and research industries in today’s competitive world.

4. To provide students with a fundamental background in the concepts of research and theory of statistics and its application.

5. To provide students with computer and communication skills and a practical experience of SAS programming.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics are a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0, MATH 1451 (Calculus I) and STAT 3352 (Applied Statistics I) or equivalent. Students with a cumulative GPA of less than 3.0 may be admitted conditionally to the program.

Program Requirements

The Program requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics Program (15 hours required):

CORE COURSES (9 HOURS)

STAT 7340 Advanced Statistical Methods I (Offered every Fall)
STAT 7341 Advanced Statistical Methods II (Offered every Spring)
STAT 7342 Introduction to SAS (Offered every Fall)

ELECTIVE COURSES (6 HOURS)

Examples
STAT 7342 Programming in SAS (Offered every Spring)
MATH 7353 Linear and Non Linear Regressions
MATH 7350 Mathematical Statistics I
MATH 7354 Experimental Designs
MATH 7355 Introduction to Sampling

Students must take 6 hours at the 5000–level or above. Courses must be related to statistics or directly support statistics. Elective courses can also be statistic courses from a specific discipline offered by other departments. The director of the program must approve elective courses for credit toward the Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics.
