2022 Arkansas School Safety Assessment

In November, 2018, the Arkansas School Safety Commission presented a final report of school safety recommendations to Governor Asa Hutchinson. These recommendations provide schools and communities with a valuable framework for evaluating current practices and assessing needs to make schools safer. In order to better understand the needs for Arkansas’s schools, the Arkansas Center for School Safety and the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Safe Schools Committee have worked with the University of Arkansas Little Rock’s Survey Research Center to develop an Arkansas School Safety Assessment to evaluate if and how schools are implementing the recommendations of the Arkansas School Safety Commission.  The data gathered from this survey will be used to help make informed decisions concerning potential future school safety funding and/or legislation as well as the identification of best practices and needed policies and procedures

A comprehensive needs assessment is required by federal funders for statewide rehabilitation services every three years. The Comprehensive Statewide Needs Assessment (CSNA) was designed to satisfy requirements in the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The results of the comprehensive, statewide assessment described the rehabilitation needs of individuals with disabilities residing within the State, particularly the vocational rehabilitation services needs of– (I) individuals with the most significant disabilities, including their need for supported employment services; (II) individuals with disabilities who are minorities and individuals with disabilities who have been unserved or underserved by the vocational rehabilitation program carried out under this title; and (III) individuals with disabilities served through other components of the statewide workforce investment system (other than the vocational rehabilitation program), as identified by such individuals and personnel assisting such individuals through the components; (ii) include an assessment of the need to establish, develop, or improve community rehabilitation programs within the State of Arkansas.

Sub-award from U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) award of $3.4 million to fund pilot projects to control feral swine in Arkansas including Feral Swine Eradication and Control Pilot Program (FSCP) – a joint effort between USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The UA Little Rock Survey Research Center will work collaboratively with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Research and Extension to develop a mail and web-based assessment of the impact of feral swine and perceptions of agricultural landowners in designated pilot areas.

Community Service Learning: 2021 Assessment of Arkansas’ High Schools

This research examines the implementation of Arkansas State Legislation Act 648 of 1993. ACT 648 allows students in grades nine (9) through twelve (12), who have completed 75 hours of Community Service Learning [CSL] to earn one (1) academic credit toward graduation. ACT 648 is grounded on the premise that by linking curriculum-based course-oriented learning and service to the community, students’ educational experiences are enhanced; students become more civically engaged and socially competent; and communities [or community organizations] get access to knowledge and creativity that might not otherwise be available or affordable.

Age-Friendly Little Rock Commission Report

The Age-Friendly Little Rock Commission (AFLRC) distributed a validated survey instrument designed by the AARP Network of Age Friendly Communities. This effort is part of a larger international effort which is associated through independent affiliates of the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Communities Program. The aim of the Age Friendly Communities program is to help cities prepare for the anticipated growth of the older adult population.  The central domains of the Age-Friendly Communities and the survey instrument included: Housing, Transportation and Buildings, Social Participation, Respect and Inclusion, Civic Participation, Communication and Information, Community Support, and Health Services. The survey served as the initial tool for conducting a baseline assessment of Little Rock’s age-friendliness and was disseminated broadly through 75 participating city community organizations. The online survey was distributed in late 2019. Initial raw survey responses were reported in March. 2020. Due to delays associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, AFLRC and AARP contracted with faculty in the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Public Affairs, Survey Research Center to finalize and generate survey results. In total, nearly a thousand Little Rock residents, age 55+, participated in the assessment. Four major themes emerged from the survey responses: (1) Individual Independence and Safety/ Security; (2) Favorable Community Perceptions; (3) Community Need for Improvements; & (4) Active Engagement.

Flood Impact Assistance Survey 2021: Mississippi River Basin

The Nature Conservancy partnered with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Survey Research Center to conduct a survey of agricultural landowners in the lower Mississippi River Basin (the Delta). Ducks Unlimited and the KKAC organization provided additional technical support in survey design, instrumentation, recruitment, and survey distribution. Landowners from the Mississippi Delta region encompassing Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi were surveyed to better understand landowners’ preferences for conservation programs and policies that focus on farmlands subject to frequent flooding. The aim will be to use this information to help design programs that provide incentives for landowners to reforest frequently flooded farmlands (FFFL). The importance of this assessment is that over the past several years, flooding in the Delta area has had a negative effect on many landowners and some landowners have even lost their capacity to farm. This survey served as the beginning of a process to eliminate some of the strain flooding places on our farming resources

The May 2020 UA Little Rock COVID-19 Assessment of Students, Faculty, & Staff serves as a comprehensive follow-up to the initial survey of students and was extended to the entire university population of faculty, staff, and students. The purpose of this project was to examine the perceptions and behaviors of faculty, staff, and students at UA Little Rock, in response to the covid-19 campus shutdown.  The goal of this project was to establish practices and resources to help these constituencies build resilience in a time of change in higher education, such as what we are experiencing currently. A group of university faculty, staff, and students were involved in the creation and administration of the survey. A portion of the survey design was based upon HEDS (Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium) Covid-19 Institutional Surveys for both students and faculty/staff.
