Members of the UALRTeach organization attended the annual UTeach Conference in Austin, TX May 21st-23rd. UALRTeach students attended sessions that focused on teaching in the secondary classroom: teaching strategies, classroom management, etc. Other conference sessions focused on professional development in specific UTeach courses and program development. Attendees from UALRTeach are featured below: Sean Smith (student), Aquia Vasseau (student), Kelly Chaney (Master Teacher), Mike Gealt (Dean of College of Science), Michelle Buchanan (Assistant Director), Tony Hall (Co-Director), Lara Hadden – not pictured (Assistant Dean for Placements & Recruitment).
The Annual UTeach Conference serves a variety of audiences, including teams from UTeach and University of Texas partners, state policymakers, donors and foundations, and others interested in future UTeach replication opportunities (http://uteach-institute.org/conference). Many guest speakers were featured at the conference. Sara Martinez Tucker is the CEO for the National Math and Science Initiative. Ms. Tucker focused on the importance of meeting the needs of our students. Dr. Michael Starbird discussed the five elements of effective thinking (also the title of his most recent book), and engaged the audience several activities that focused on effective questioning: Students should be asking the questions instead of the teacher.
The plenary session provided four presentations from recent UTeach program graduates. These individuals just completed their first year in the classroom. Each presenter identified their ability to not only survive but also succeed when other “traditional education graduates” did not, and they contributed their successes to their training under a UTeach program.
