Bowen Moot Court Board excels in competition

Bowen students Pierce Hunter, David Koehler, and Michael Stover competed in the William E. McGee National Civil Rights Moot Court Competition at the University of Minnesota School of Law (Minneapolis, MN). The Problem was whether a for-profit secular corporation or its shareholders have standing to challenge the Affordable Care Act’s Contraceptive Mandate under the Free Exercise Clause or the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Thirty-three teams competed in three Prelim Rounds, followed by a Round of Sixteen, then the Quarterfinals, then the Semifinals, and finally the Finals. The Bowen team made it to the Final Round against Chicago-Kent School of Law. The Final Round panel of five judges included several Minnesota Courts of Appeal judges and Minnesota Supreme Court justices. Our team excelled.

Awards we won:

  • Second Place Team Overall
  • Best Oralist Overall: Pierce Hunter
  • Best Oralist of Preliminary Rounds: Pierce Hunter
